Sex and Health

Many people who have a sexually-transmitted disease or infection have no symptoms – if you are sexually active, or have been in the past, it is important to be screened for STD’s. Client Advocates at Hope Resource Center will meet with you prior to your test to talk with you about risk factors and about your overall sexual health.

Symptoms may include painful urination, fever, pain in the abdominal/pelvic region, change in discharge, bumps, and sores or blisters. . If you have symptoms of a sexually transmitted disease or infection (STD/STI), both you and your partner should be tested as soon as possible by a medical practitioner.

Avoiding exposure is the best strategy for preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Proper use of condoms with each act of sexual intercourse may reduce but does not eliminate the risk of STDs.

Hope Resource Center offers testing for:

  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Herpes
  • Human Papilloma Virus
  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C

There is no clinical examination, test (other than a pap smear), or treatment for some types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Hope Resource Center does not perform pap smears but we are able to do a clinical examination of genital bumps and worts.

Read information on sexually transmitted diseases.

Abstaining from sex until marriage is the only way proven 100% effective to avoid STDs.

For help with assessing your risk for STD/STI’s or to schedule an appointment please call (865) 525-HOPE.

*All positive laboratory findings for Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Hepatitis, and HIV are reported to the Knox County Health Department, as required by state law.
